Lang Lang, which means “Brilliance of the Sky”, is a Chinese concert pianist, who was inspired at the age of two by the Tom and Jerry episode, “Cat Concerto”, featuring the Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 by Franz Liszt.  He began piano lessons at the age of three, winning first place in a piano competition at age five.

Now in his thirties, Lang Lang is known world wide for his concert performances. In 2008, he launched the Lang Lang International Music Foundation in New York to enrich the lives of children through a deeper understanding and enjoyment of classical music.  He has done much to encourage children and young musicians to take an interest in classical music through his foundation.

KVNO encourages you to tune in today, during the 10 o’clock hour to listen to Lang Lang’s performances of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 1 and Rachmaninoff’s Piano Sonata No. 2.

Howard Hanson, Nebraska’s native son from Wahoo, will be featured tonight during “Nocturnes with Clifford Jones.”  Hanson, not only a composer and conductor, was director of the Eastman School of Music for 40 years.  As Eastman’s director, he established a high quality school, providing opportunities for commissioning and performing American classical music.  Hanson’s legacy of service to American music lives on in the Hanson Institute for American Music at the Eastman school, directed by Hanson until his death.

Tonight, at 10 p.m., tune to KVNO to listen to not only Hanson’s Symphony No. 1,  “Nordic”, directed by the composer himself, but also Richard Strauss’ “Death and Transfiguration”, both in their entirety.

Equally respected as a violinist, violist and conductor, Pinchas Zukerman, (b. July 16, 1948), is indeed a master of our time. His musical genius and prodigious technique marvel critics and audiences alike, and his exceptional artistic standards continue to earn him the highest acclaim.  Maestro Zukerman’s devotion to younger generations of musicians has been applauded.

In addition to a position with the National Arts Centre Orchestra, Mr. Zukerman chairs the Pinchas Zukerman Performance Program at the Manhattan School of Music.  To maintain close relationships with his students while fulfilling the travel demands of his concert engagements, Mr. Zukerman has pioneered the use of distance-learning technology in the arts.

Today, KVNO will play recordings of Pinchas Zukerman, both conducting and performing on violin.  Listen to the music of Mozart and Lalo in the 10 a.m hour, along with Maestro Zukerman performing the music of Schubert throughout the day.

This evening, Classical 90.7 KVNO scoops out a double dip for lovers of the Romantic music style, particularly Richard Strauss and Johannes Brahms.  Both legendary German composers, Strauss of the late Romantic era; Brahms being one of the leading Romantic musicians, have contrasting flavors on tonight’s menu.

Strauss’ “Death and Transfiguration” (Tod und Verklärung), a tone poem for large orchestra, portrays a man on this deathbed, continuously fighting back, until… it triumphs.  But, does it?  Starting out with quietly pulsating strings, reminiscent of nostalgic childhood memories, the music soon intensifies, like a fever.  The man struggles, with the music becoming agitated and explosive…. death seems to overcome in a huge climax, but a final beautiful theme emerges as a triumphant statement of the immortal soul!

Brahms String Quintet No 1 (‘Spring’) tops off the double dipper.  It is unusual in the fact that is actually a string quartet scored with an extra viola.  The opening movement is thoroughly Romantic, while the third movement has a “Baroque” flavor to it. Brahms describes this String Quintet as one of his most beautiful works, despite the fact that it was one of the least popular.
