220 or 55?

In Uncategorized on February 28, 2012 at 4:56 pm

Had Rossini aged only one year for every four, it’s possible he could be alive today at the age of 55!  Born in a leap year, (February 29, 1792), Rossini is best known for his operas.  A tendency for song-like melodies is evident throughout Rossini’s scores, which earned him the nickname “The Italian Mozart.”

Beginning in the wee hours of the morning, throughout the 10 o’clock theme hour, culminating with the 7 p.m. evening classics, KVNO salutes this double celebration with the music of Rossini.

Enjoy the best of Rossini’s pieces, from the Barber of Seville to the William Tell Overture – and everything in between on member supported Classical 90.7 KVNO!

To Perambulate or Not?

In Uncategorized on February 27, 2012 at 2:24 pm

That is the musical question American composer John Alden Carpenter, (b. February 28, 1876), dares to answer in his piece,  Adventures in a Perambulator.  Illinois born and a direct descendant of the John Alden of Mayflower fame, Carpenter was educated at Harvard and studied with Elgar in Rome.  Like his contemporary, Charles Ives, Carpenter entered into the family business, working as an executive by day, composer by night.

Join us on 90.7 KVNO all Tuesday long for the music of John Alden Carpenter.  Take pure delight in the morning with Adventures in a Perambulator, Carpenter’s musical recollection of his childhood memories of being wheeled around in a baby carriage.  Later in the afternoon, both Symphonies No. 1 and No. 2 will be aired in their entirety.

Which John Adams?

Common Tones

Shaker Loops

John Adams, (b. February 15, 1947), is a Pulitzer Prize winning American composer.  Adams began composing early at the age of ten, first hearing his works performed at age 14.  Hearing the works of Philip Glass in San Francisco, Adams was drawn to the minimalist sound.  Feeling that the genre had its limits, Adams coined the term “post-minimalism”, characterized by greater dynamic contrasts and a more layered and fluid sound.

Classical 90.7 KVNO will play John Adams music throughout the day (February 15) and feature a special hour at 7 p.m., showcasing “Common Tones in Simple Time” and “Shaker Loops.”  “Shaker Loops” heralded the beginnings of Adams’ “post-minimalism” style.  For the night owls/early risers, Adams’ Harmonielehre can be heard in its entirety at 3 a.m.  John Adams continues to compose to this day, his most recent work being City Noir (2009) for orchestra.
