Stay up late this Friday night and join host Dana Buckingham for the Midnight Special on KVNO. This week’s program features early twentieth century pianist, Walter Gieseking. Gieseking was born in France to German parents on November 5, 1895. His father was a celebrated doctor and Gieseking spent most of his youth growing up along the French and Italian Riviera. During the First World War, Gieseking was drafted into the German Army and served as a regimental bandsman where he also played the jazz piano in an Army dance band. After the war, Gieseking often performed the works of the great German avant-garde composers of the 1920′s. Before long, Gieseking developed quite a reputation for his interpretation of the great French Impressionist composers largely due to his ability to, “…coax sounds from the piano which seemed to belie its very nature.” Our all-Gieseking program this week features this master pianist performing the music of Ravel, Debussy and Franck. So make plans now to stay up late this Friday night and join host Dana Buckingham for the Midnight Special exclusively on listener-supported, KVNO!
